  8. Introduction
  9. ------------
  10.  Extensions to the basic FITS format can be defined as specified in
  11. Grosbol et al. (Astron. Astrophys. Suppl. 73, p359-364, 1988). The IAU
  12. FITS Working Group (WG) under Commission 5 registers the names of such
  13. conforming extensions. The status of a given extension can have one of
  14. the following levels:

  16.    Status   Remarks
  17.   ---------------------------------------------------------------
  18.      S      Standard FITS extension accepted by the IAU FITS WG
  19.             and recommended by the IAU.
  20.      P      Proposal for FITS extension accepted by local FITS
  21.             committees but not yet by the IAU FITS WG.
  22.      D      Draft proposal to be discussed in local FITS commitees.
  23.      R      Reserved FITS extension name for which a full draft proposal
  24.             has not yet been submitted.
  25.      L      Local FITS extension which has a limited scope only.

  50.      'A3DTABLE'    L     NRAO   Extension used by AIPS and defined in
  51.                                 the 'Going AIPS' Manual Chapter 14.

  53.      'IUEIMAGE'    L     IUE    Local extension defined for archiving
  54.                                 of special IUE data products.

  56. Anyone who wants to register a FITS extension name should contact
  57. either the NOST FITS Support Office
  58. ('bschlesinger@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov' or 'NSSDCA::BSCHLESINGER') or the
  59. Chairman of the IAU FITS Working Group ('pgrosbol@eso.org' or
  60. 'ESO::PGROSBOL'). A short description and justification should be
  61. submitted together with the request for registration.
